It was the first season-opening loss for the Tar Heels since 1983. North Carolina tied its season openers in 1985 and 2002.
The game-winner came in the 108th minute. Tar Heels keeper Anna Rodenbough went all 110 minutes in goal for UNC and made a career-high eight saves.

N.C. STATE 2, WESTERN CAROLINA 0: Briana Cunningham and Lindsay Vera second-half goals as N.C. State blanked Western Carolina at Method Road Soccer Stadium in the season opener for both teams.
Senior goalkeeper Megan Connors had three saves as she recorded her 10th career shutout.
Cunningham, a freshman, put the Wolfpack on the board in the 70th minute, scoring from eight yards out on an assist from Chantalle Dugas.
Vera, a sophomore who was the Pack's leading scorer in 2005, made it 2-0 in the 82nd minute, knocking in the rebound of her own shot from about 13 yards.
ELON 2, CAMPBELL 0: Lizz Johnson had to make only two saves in goal, and Elon got goals from Ashley Condon and Tina Longo as the host Phoenix blanked Campbell in the season opener for both teams.
MEN'S SOCCER
NORTH CAROLINA 2, WILLIAM & MARY 0: North Carolina scored twice in just more than five minutes late in the first half and limited William & Mary to just six shots in the season opener for both teams at the Wake Forest Adidas Classic in Winston-Salem.
Wake Forest routed Central Florida 5-0 in Friday's other game.
Senior preseason All-America Ben Hunter scored the Tar Heels' first goal on an unassisted strike at 29:52, and sophomore forward Stephen Bickford followed with his second career goal at 35:04. Classmate Brian Shriver picked up an assist on Bickford's score.
VOLLEYBALL
ECU 3, WILLIAM & MARY 1: East Carolina opened its season with a victory over William & Mary in the second match of the ECU Invitational at Greenville, winning 30-25, 30-17, 25-30, 30-21.
Junior outside hitter Kelley Wernert tallied a career-high 10 digs while adding 17 kills to record a double-double.
Sophomore middle blocker Kim Jefferson and junior outside hitter Mignon Dubenion each equaled their career highs in kills on the night, with 15 apiece.
NORTH CAROLINA 3, IDAHO 0: North Carolina used a balanced attack to win its seventh consecutive season opener, sweeping Idaho 32-30, 30-22, 30-21 in the Sooner Legends Nike Invitational at Norman, Okla.
Stephanie Jansma notched a double-double with 29 assists and 15 digs, while Brianna Eskola had a team-high 17 digs.
Five Tar Heels had at least five kills, with Bekah Brinkley leading the way with a match-high 11.
DUKE 3, MARQUETTE 1: Led by junior Ali Hausfeld, who recorded her 3,000th career assist, Duke opened its season with a 30-25, 28-30, 30-17, 30-21 victory over visiting Marquette.
Hausfeld became the fifth Duke player to record 3,000 career assists and moved into fourth place on the all-time list. Her 69 assists on the night give her 3,058 career assists.
Carrie DeMange led the Blue Devils offensively with 23 kills to go along with 13 digs and five blocks.
DAVIDSON 3, N.C. STATE 0: Davidson swept the Wolfpack 30-21, 30-23, 30-25 at Charlotte in the season opener for both teams.
Sophomore Keisha Raibon led the Wolfpack with 11 kills.
