Sewage spill posed no threat, city says

A sewer line under the Oxford Commons public housing complex clogged with grease last week, causing 69,000 gallons of raw sewage to bubble up out of a manhole and go down a storm drain that empties into a tributary of the Eno River.

A media release issued by the city said the overflow was discovered at 6:30 a.m. Friday. Workers quickly unclogged the line, according to the statement. They also dammed up the creek and pumped much of the sewage back into the sewer system. There was "no environmental hazard to persons or property" from the spill, according to the city.
